What is a Chakra?
I often mention various crystals vibrating with the frequency of certain chakras, but what the heck does that mean? Take a deep dive with me down the rabbit hole of this ancient wisdom and learn how you can use it to be and feel your best.
The first mention of the chakras is in ancient Hindu texts, but can also be found in ancient Tibetan and Chinese scriptures as well. My knowledge lies in the ancient Hindu teachings that I am so honored to be passing onto you. Here we'll take a look at the chakras in a more simplistic view and how we can quickly start to work toward healing using crystals, and in future blogs we'll really dissect each one individually.
Chakra is a Sanskrit word meaning "wheel". The chakras are believed to be swirling disks of energy that start at the base of the spine and run all the way up, with seven main centers along the spine to the top of the head. Each energy center corresponds to various physical and energetic aspects of the body. If a chakra is overactive, underactive, or blocked, it can cause dis-ease in the body and mind. When the chakras are balanced, we are able to bring balance and health to every aspect of our lives.
Each chakra vibrates at a specific frequency, and as such, we can use energy from various sources to bring in and maintain balance to the chakras. Because everything is energy and carries it's own vibrational frequency, we're able to manipulate what energy we bring into our auric field in various ways. These include color therapy, yoga, sound healing, mantras, and of course my personal favorite, crystals!
How can we use crystals to balance the chakras?
The first step to balance is to realize that there is an imbalance in the first place. Living in a fast paced society, coupled with the bizarre events of 2020, many of us are spread thin and running around completely disconnected from ourselves. One of the fastest and easiest ways to pinpoint what areas of your life can use more balance is by taking a survey to determine which of your chakras are out of balance. My favorite free one can be found here .
It's important to remember two things when working with the chakra system. The first is that there is no 'good' or 'bad'. Having a balanced chakra isn't inherently good, and having a blocked one isn't 'bad'. It just is. So be honest with yourself when answering the questions to get the most benefit from the information provided. Allowing yourself to acknowledge what is without judging yourself for it is a critical step to healing. Open your heart, take a deep breath, and get to work!
The second thing to keep in mind is that finding balance is an ongoing process. We're never done working to balance all aspects of our lives. So you may find that one day you're feeling grounded and connected to the earth, and the next day you're spacey and anxious. Or one day you have so much energy at work or at home, while another day you're struggling to get out of bed. The more you familiarize yourself with the chakra system, the better you'll be able to tell which chakras are off each morning when you wake up.
How do I know which crystals to choose for each chakra?
After you've determined which chakras need to be balanced, you can start choosing crystals you'd like to work with. An easy way to do this is to layer color therapy with crystal healing. Each chakra vibrates with the frequency of a specific color on the electromagnetic spectrum. Using the color correspondence of each chakra, we can work toward balance by simply bringing these colors into our energy field. One way to do this is through crystals and is great for beginners!
As we can see here, the lower chakras vibrate with colors that have low energy, thus a lower frequency. This makes sense since the lower chakras are associated with physical matter and basic survival instincts. As we make our way up the chakra ladder, the energy steadily increases and carries much higher energy and higher frequencies, and is focused on the more spiritual aspects of life.
The root chakra (muladhara) carries the vibration of the color red. This chakra is located at the base of the spine and is associated with our basic instincts, feelings of belonging, safety, and connection to the Earth. When this chakra is out of balance, it may manifest as anxiety, depression, anger, low self-esteem, as well as negative thinking and pessimism. When in balance, we're clear-headed, focused, have a high sense of self-worth, and energy to set and accomplish goals.
Crystals for the root chakra- Garnet, Red Jasper, Red Tiger's Eye, Bloodstone, Mahogany Obsidian, Ruby, Vanadinite
The sacral chakra (svadisthana)- carries the vibration of the color orange. This chakra is located about 3" below the navel and is associated with emotions, relationships, creativity, and the ways we express ourselves sexually and sensually. When this chakra is out of balance, it may manifest as dependency and co-dependency to people or substances that bring instant gratification, feeling numb and out of touch with the world, overindulgence in sex, or a lack of sexual desire and satisfaction. When in balance, our relationships with the world and people in it are centered around nurturing and pleasure in a balanced exchange. Our creativity and sensuality are ignited and we are able to enjoy the pleasures of life.
Crystals for the sacral chakra - Carnelian, Tiger's Eye, Orange Calcite, Amber, Tangerine Quartz, Sunstone, Peach Selenite
The solar plexus chakra (manipura) vibrates with the color yellow. It is located in the upper abdomen above the navel and just below the sternum, and is associated with our personal power, will, and vitality. When this chakra is out of balance it arises as digestive issues, low self-esteem, egocentric actions and thoughts, and an inability to accomplish goals. Conversely, when this chakra is balanced, we experience high self-esteem and self-worth, accomplish goals, and honor our personal will.
Crystals for the solar plexus chakra - Citrine, Gold Tiger's Eye, Yellow Jade, Pyrite, Golden Healer Quartz, Yellow Calcite
The heart chakra (anahata) vibrates with the color green and is located in the center of the chest. This chakra is associated with unconditional love, compassion, and joy. When this chakra is imbalanced, it may manifest as a lack of trust in yourself and others, co-dependency, manipulative behaviors, and an inability to fully receive and give love. When this chakra is open and balanced, we awaken to the love, joy, and compassion that surrounds us daily, and freely give and accept love.
Crystals for the heart chakra - Malachite, Amazonite, Prehnite, Emerald, Green Jade, Green Aventurine, Chrysocolla
The throat chakra (visuddha) vibrates with the color blue and is located at the throat. The first of the three spiritual chakras, the throat chakra is associated with communication and our abilitiy to authentically and honestly speak our inner truths while also being open to listening to others. When this chakra is blocked, it may manifest as interpersonal communication issues, an inability to concisely and fearlessly speak our truth, and confusion about what we really want out of life. When in balance, communication flows freely, we're no longer afraid to speak up for ourselves, and we can begin creating the life we truly want without fear of confrontation or judgment.
Crystals for the throat chakra - Turquoise, Amazonite, Aquamarine, Larimar, Sodalite, Azurite, Angelite, Blue Lace Agate, Lapis Lazuli
The third eye chakra (ajna) is associated with the color indigo and is located on the forehead between the brow. This chakra is associated with our inner knowing, intuition, and imagination. When this chakra is out of alignment, we may find ourselves indecisive, unable to see the bigger picture of situations, and disconnected from our true purpose. When aligned, decision making becomes easy, you're able to trust yourself and have a clear vision for your life's purpose, and see beyond duality.
Crystals for the third eye chakra - Lapis Lazuli, Sodalite, Iolite, Fluorite, Blue Apatite, Cavansite, Dumortierite, Blue Kyanite
The crown chakra (sahasrara) vibrates with the color violet. It is located just above the head and is associated with higher consciousness and connection to the Divine and all that exists. When out of balance, we experience a lack of spiritual connection, depression, indecisiveness, and often struggle to find meaningfulness. When this chakra is balanced, we're at peace with our belief system, feel connected and guided by a higher power ( the universe, god, etc.), and find deep purpose and meaning in our lives.
Crystals for the crown chakra - Amethyst, Charoite, Lepidolite, Indigo Gabbro, Phosphosiderite, Sugilite.
Once you have chosen which crystals you would like to work with, it's time to decide how you're going to work with them. One of my favorite ways to do this is by wearing crystal jewelry or carrying the crystals in my pocket or bra. As I mentioned above, the act of bringing the color frequency into your energy field will work to align and balance the chakras. You can also choose to place the crystals on your body in the corresponding chakra location and meditating in a quiet place focusing on the chakra you want to balance. Simply keeping the crystals in your environment and in your view is also an effective way to use crystals for chakra healing. Doing all of the above will supercharge your balancing intentions.

I hope this information gives you a general understanding of the chakra system and what I mean when I say certain crystals vibrate with the frequency of certain chakras. While we have barely scratched the surface of this ancient wisdom, it's a good starting point for beginning to understand and work with the chakras and crystals. Stay tuned for future blogs where I will be going into great detail about each chakra individually, starting at the root and working my way up the ladder to the crown.
