What is a chakra? Part 2

Welcome back to the wonderful world of chakras! In part one of this series, I focused mostly on the emotional and spiritual aspects of the chakras, but that's just one small piece of this ancient puzzle. In addition to governing certain aspects of our emotional body, the chakras correspond to aspects of our physical bodies as well.

Ancient yogic science believes that stagnant energy in the chakras built up over time creates energetic blocks in these areas of the body. According to this ancient wisdom, this stagnant energy in the body leads to all dis-ease we experience physically and mentally. In general, blocks are usually caused by trauma, both physical (getting in a car accident, injury, surgery) and emotional (loss of a job or loved one, divorce). Blocked or imbalanced chakras left on their own manifest as pain and various health-related conditions. Here I'll go over some of the physical symptoms of imbalance so you can easily identify which of your chakras are blocked and begin healing.

Root Chakra (muladhara)

The root chakra is located at the base of the spine. Emotionally, it's connected to our feelings of safety and security on this planet. Physically, it's connected to any issues we may have from the waist down. Physical symptoms of an imbalanced root chakra include:

  • problems in the lower extremities - legs, feet, knees
  • constipation
  • sciatica
  • issues with male reproductive organs
  • problems with the immune system

Sacral Chakra (svadhishthana)

Located about two inches below the naval, we have the sacral chakra. This chakra is responsible for our feelings and emotions, creativity, and relationships. When this chakra is blocked or imbalanced, it may manifest physically as:

  • back and hip pain
  • reproductive health challenges/abnormal menstruation
  • urinary and kidney infections
  • infertility
  • impotence

Solar Plexus Chakra (manipura)

Just above the naval, right under the rib cage is the solar plexus chakra. This chakra provides us with the self-esteem and energy to set and accomplish goals. Often times when this chakra is out of balance, it may manifest as:

  • digestive issues
  • chronic fatigue
  • pancreas and gallbladder issues
  • difficulties regulating blood pressure
  • diabetes

Heart Chakra (anahata)

Located in the center of the chest, the heart chakra regulates the ways in which we give and receive love and compassion. On a physical level, signs of an unbalanced heart chakra may include:

  • high blood pressure
  • poor circulation
  • asthma
  • upper back and shoulder problems
  • pain in the upper extremities including the wrists and hands

Thorat Chakra (visuddha)

Above the heart chakra, at the throat point is the throat chakra. It is the hub of communication and truth and regulates our ability to both listen and speak. Physical signs of a throat chakra block or imbalance include:

  • thyroid issues
  • sore throats
  • sinus infections
  • pain in the shoulders and neck
  • jaw pain

Third Eye Chakra (ajna)

Between the eyebrows on the forehead is the third eye chakra. This energy center represents intuition, spiritual awareness, and insight into our internal dialogue. Physically, imbalances may manifest as

  • headaches/migraines
  • sinusitis
  • poor vision
  • insomnia
  • compromised immune system,

Crown Chakra (sahasrara)

The crown chakra is the last of the seven main chakra centers and is located at the top of the head. It's responsible for our spiritual connections and higher levels of consciousness. When this chakra is blocked, symptoms may include:

  • neurological problems
  • nerve pain
  • insomnia
  • depression
  • headaches/migraines

As usual, this is not intended to be a substitute for medical advice and care from a licensed healthcare professional, but rather bring in the missing link of energy medicine to modern day science. In society today, we tend to not believe things are real unless we can see them, but the wisdom of the ancients far surpasses that of 21st century humans. Western medicine is slowly starting to recognize the purpose our energetic bodies play in our over all health and well-being. Having energy, prana, life force, flowing freely through our bodies is crucial to our overall health and well-being. The best part is, you don't have to blindly believe! This science invites you to see for yourself the many benefits of an energetic maintenance practice.
